Konawaena football adds another honor

Konawaena’s football team, the BIIF Division II champion, received the 2015 Big Island Football Officials Association Sportsmanship Award at its end-of-the-year banquet Sunday.

The BIFOA Sportsmanship Award has been in existence since 1978 and is voted on by Big Island officials at the end of every season. Last year, Kamehameha and Pahoa shared the honor.

“The officials keep track of sportsmanship throughout the year and then at our final meeting we vote,” head official Randy Morris said. “Talking to (coach) Brad (Uemoto), I know this was a goal of his because they have not won it here in a while.”

Hilo High coaching applicants sought

Hilo High is accepting head coaching applications for the following fall sport vacancies: air riflery, cheerleading and football.

Application form can be picked up at the schools main office, and Dec. 30 is the deadline to apply.

Hilo Little League sign-ups ongoing

Hilo Little League is holding registration for baseball players, managers and coaches for ages 8-16 through Jan. 4.

In addition, Softball sign-ups for ages 8-18 runs through Feb. 28.

Player registration, medical forms, proofs of residency requirements and manager or coach applications can be obtained by calling 319-8106.

The first deadline for coaching applications is Dec. 31. Late applicants will be placed on a wait-list.

Lincoln Wreckers sign-ups ongoing

Lincoln Wreckers is looking for 11-and 12-year-old players for their baseball team.

Kamehameha volleyball three-day camp

The Kamehameha volleyball team is hosting its first three-day boys and girls “Christmas Volleyball Camp,” on Dec. 28-29 at the school campus.

There are three sessions: Session I: $50 for 2nd to 8th graders, day only. Session II: $25 for high school, day and evening. Session III: $75 for high school, evening only.

Team discounts are available for six or more players.

HI-PAL hosts Winter Basketball Classic

The Hawaii Isle Police Activities League will hold its 34th annual Winter Basketball Classic from Dec. 26-29.

Entries are being accepted for the following age groups to be played at the following locations:

• 7-8 at the Edith Kanakaole Multipurpose Stadium

• Boys 9-10 and girls 10 and under at the Edith Kanakaole Multipurpose Stadium

• Boys 11-12 and girls 12-under at Hilo Armory

• Boys 13-14 and girls 14-under at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium

The age cutoff date is Dec. 31, 2015.

All championship games will be played Dec. 29 at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Registration for 8-and-under teams is $60, and $80 a team for 9 and above. To help attract outer-island teams, a reduced rate of $25 per team is being offered to visiting squads.

The entry deadline is Nov. 27, and each team is required to submit a registration packet.

Aikane Tennis will be held 7-10 p.m. Dec. 22 at the Edith Kanaka’ole Multipurpose Stadium

Hilo Armory mixed 6’s volleyball tourney

There will be a mixed-6’s indoor volleyball tournament on Saturday, Jan. 2 at the Hilo Armory gym.

The cost is $30 per team, and the deadline to register is 5 p.m. on Sunday.

There is still room for one “A” division team and two “B” division teams, and all ages are welcome.

Waiakea golf benefit Jan. 9 at Hilo Muni

The Friends of Waiakea Golf will host its 2016 Waiakea High School Golf Scramble on Jan. 9 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

The tournament format is a two-person scramble, costing $200 per team, which includes green fees, golf cart, pupus, bento lunch and dessert.
